This law regards the conditions and requirements for the transportation and release of wild animals in Colombia to reduce the stress and suffering of animals that have been rescued or confiscated. It recognizes the importance of animal welfare and notes that wild animals are to be treated as sentient animals, and should therefore be treated with respect.
The law ensures the animals’ physical and psychological safety by implementing requirements for holding containers, temperature, ambiance, vehicle speed, and so on during transportation.
It specified further that young animals require special attention due to their unique susceptibility to harm.
The law requires that, when possible, the animals should be transported in passenger areas, as opposed to cargo holds, and those that transport them must be trained to do so.
It makes a clear distinction, too, between wild animals and companion animals concerning health treatment, vaccination, and relevant companion animal legislation.
Finally, the law describes penalties for those who do not properly handle and transport wild animals according to the aforementioned rules.
